明州的魅力寒冬 The amazing winter of Minnesoda

从我抵达圣克劳德的第一天开始,就不断有人跟我描述明州的寒冬,我总是以为大家不过是危言耸听,想我大天津,夏天如是炎热,冬天也有几天冷得让人不想出门。可是上周六的温度的确是刷新了我对寒冷的认知,零下33度,对于我这个从小生活在中国北方的人,这简直是闻所未闻的温度。周六试着出门喝了个咖啡,感觉似乎还好,忙忙碌碌准备圣诞节的人们,让冰雪覆盖的圣克劳德变的生动有趣。朋友圈的一个大哥还做了一个实验,泼水成冰,有爱,冬天也不寒冷。我对正在经历的这个冬天心怀期待,一定会很特别!

At the first day I came to St. Cloud, I was told it will be terrible cold in the winter. I was half-believed with it untile the last Saturday. The weather forecast showed the deepest temperature was -33 degree Celsius. And someone has taken an experiment. He splashing the hot water, It became ice soon. It is so amazing. I am enjoying the winter, I trust it will be a special winter for me, just enjoy everyday !

12月的晨会 The monthly meeting

 

每月的第一个星期一是例行的晨会,因为上周一突降的大雪,晨会推迟到这周一举行。雪后异常清冷的早晨,当我进入Apollo资源中心的时候只有校长、副校长和会议的主持人员。

Apollo will have a meeting on the first Monday of every month .Because of the unexpected high snow last Monday , so the meeting delayed to this Monday.  After a  snow , in such a  cold morning , when I walked into the North resource center , there only few teacher there.

月会往往都是布置新一个月的工作,也会总结上一个月的活动。同时,每月会有一个主题,美国校园里非常关注霸凌、关注平等和尊重,所以会议往往会有讲解也有讨论,老师们在听会议的同时也尝尝会有新的问题提出来,互动非常好。

The meeting of the month always surround the plan of the new month and the summary of the last month. Besides that , there has a topic for every month to let the teachers talk about or just have a consider about it . In American school garden , it is concerned about  “bully and equality and respect “. All the teachers will listen, watching and discuss the topic.

在听会议的时候,我常常被手语老师吸引,她往往站在Apollo的2位聋人老师的身边,认真的为他们解释。不论是主讲者的内容还是提问老师的话,她都在尽心翻译,细节让我体会到了美国对于平等的重视,不因为人数少就忽视聋人群体,这才是真正意义上的尊重。

In the meeting,  I am always attracted by the finger language teacher , she always stands before the 3 teachers of hearing disorder , she explains the content carefully , not only about the speech but also about the questions . This kind of  detail made me feel the “equal and respect.” img_0121

About 《Lever Chinese》

我在Apollo的中文沉浸式班级是从幼儿园参加中文项目的年级学生们。由于每个人的学习特点不同,有的学生中途离开过中文项目,所以在长达10年的学习过程中,他们的语言能力有了较明显的区别。没有教材、如何有效判断他们的语言能力,从而因材施教变成了我这学期的主要问题。好在学区语言沉浸式项目的负责人susan帮助了我,申请了《lever Chinese》的线上课程。这个课程就是以阅读和词汇量的考察为依据,确定每个学生的不同水平。为了完成这个水平测试,我参加了3次培训,最终学会了熟练使用这个网站,也给了学生比较客观的评价。我认为从确认学生阅读水平方面,这个网站的课程设计是比较成功的。但是语言学习是一个综合体,要全面判断学生水平,还需要其他教学手段的辅助。

目前根据测试,我把学生分成三组进行教学,当然有时也会合在一起,就同一个主题进行学习。

The immersion students are all studying Chinese from their kindergarten. Almost all of the students are good at listening and speaking . So at the first time when I ask them to learn something looks a bit simple , they didn’t understand .And there was no books for the immersion students , how to teach and what to teach ? Thanks for Ms. Susan , the coach of the Chinese immersion program , she helped me to apply the on line . This website can give the students an objective assessment in vocabulary and comprehension . But not in grammar ,not in writing . So I gave them another kind of test to certain their level . and now I teach them in 3 groups ,sometimes with the same topic , sometimes are different .

二学期,书写越来越重要 Pay attention to your writing

对于world language 的学生,我对他们采取的是分阶段教学。语言教学是一个综合性的学习过程,包括听、说、读、写4方面的内容。因为他们是初学者,所以任以方面对于他们来讲都不简单。因此我在学期之初,侧重于他们对汉语语音的感知和把握。鼓励学生多听多说话,在第一学期,基本保证了所有的学生都可以听懂并回答老师提出的简单问题,并能简单介绍自己。二学期开始,我把教学重点放在了汉字书写上。着重培养他们对结构的感知。

For the students of the world language class ,everything is fresh .There are four sides in language learning ,that is listening/speaking/reading \writing .Language learning is a  comprehensive course .At first of their learning ,I always ask them to hear and speak. And after 2 months learning , almost all of them can answer the simple questions they were asked , and can answer the questions correctly. So from the second trimester I  asked them to write more characters .  Learn to write in Chinese characters is difficult but interesting , and they got an obviously progress.img_8890

 

 

 

 

Special Homework/ 有爱的家庭作业

These days we are learning about family members. I taught them to read from “father ,mother to how many people are there in your family .”They always did well in my class , I am so appreciated with their performance in my class.

And when I collected their homework , I was moved at that time , they not only introduced their family ,they drew too. every one drew it . It made a common homework became a living paper.

To the world language students , they can speak a lot of their personal information , they can hear ,answer and ask . from now on , I will pay more attention to their reading .

最近我在教零基础班的学生家庭成员,从爸爸妈妈这些称谓到“你家有几个人?”这样的句型练习,我们很认真地进行操练。看到学生们在课上表现出来的很强烈的学习积极性,作为老师我真的很欣慰。

      昨天我给他们留了“介绍你的家庭成员”这个作业,为了练习汉字书写,要求他们写出家人的基本信息,当然如果他们愿意,也可以画一画。当我收完作业时,我真的被萌化了。学生们不仅完成了我的作业,还把家人一笔笔认真地画出来,枯燥的句型练习瞬间变得超级可爱。
      这些worldlanguage的学生最近进步真的很快,他们已经能简单交流自己的基本情况了,包括听说,包括自己提问,他们真的很棒!接下来我会更加强他们在读方面的练习。

快乐的万圣节 Happy Halloween

10月31日是美国传统的感恩节,在这一天到来之前我给immersion的学生留了一个特别的作业,就是感恩节介绍。学生们很用心,他们分组准备材料,做了ppt,还准备了音乐。这次是托马斯同学主持的,他用视频介绍了感恩节的由来习俗和食品,以及这一天美国家庭做什么。这份作业充分体现了学生们的创造力。

Oct31st,is the Halloween Day ,before the festival ,I gave the immersion students a special homework ,to introduce the Halloween. The students are carefully with the homework . They search data from the website, they prepare the powerpoint ,and they prepared the music of Halloween. Tomas made the speech before us ,introduced the origins of the Halloween ,and the custom the food , and what the American families’ favorite .I was deeply impressed by the students’ creativity .

 

 

 

学生的万圣节作业 The homework about Halloween

Apollo High School的沉浸式课堂共有8名学生,他们都是从幼儿园开始进入中文沉浸式学习项目的。从教他们一段时间后,我了解到他们的特点是听力、口语较好,阅读与书写能力稍弱。想要提高他们汉语学习的兴趣,常常需要老师另辟蹊径。

时近美国万圣节,于是我给了他们一个特别的家庭作业。介绍美国万圣节。我把学生们分成两组,一组准备美国感恩节由来、特色、习俗,另一组准备介绍万圣节的音乐、服装等等。我给他们的准备时间是两周。

两周之后,他们按时上交了万圣节作业。托马斯同学主讲,阿塞亚配合。他们查资料、做ppt,准备了内容丰富的讲解。不仅完成了我给的任务。还准备了万圣节音乐《thriller》。在课堂上,大家用介绍万圣节的方式使用中文,课堂气氛十分活跃。

相较于单纯的写作文,这样的作业形式对他们更有吸引力。

There are 8 students in the Language Art class of Apollo High School . They joined the Chinese Immersion program from the kindergarten age, they have learnt Chinese for about 10 years.  So they are all good at listening and speaking . But all of them don’t like the writing and reading . As a teacher , I prepared many kind of method to motivate them.

The Halloween is coming now , so I gave them a special homework to introduce the Halloween . I divided them into two groups , one prepare ,the story and the custom , the other group prepare the music and the special cloths of Halloween. I gave them 2 weeks to prepare.

Two weeks later , they gave their homework . To my  astonish , they did well . they check from books and the web , they used the powerpoint to show me their homework .  Tomas was the speaker and Isaiah coordinate with him .

It’s a successful homework , and I should say “good job”.
